COM Question

Dumb question, but is COM done away with? I'm a little confused, because Frank Luna's book doesn't seem to have any reference to it, whereas Jim Adams' RPG book is loaded with it. Both are DX9... well Luna's new one is DX10. I find Luna's code so much easier to read as well, too bad he doesn't have one on working with engines.
.NET is certainly centre-stage at the moment, but given that .NET objects can expose themselves via COM and .NET applications can make ready use of COM, I wouldn't say it's entirely "done away with".
