A beginner's idea of a project

i'm looking for another beginner, like myself, who is trying to learn C++ and preferably directX API for game programming. What i want to do is see if i can get someone to join up with me, over the internet, and learn this stuff with me, and eventually (sooner the better) build a simple 2D game.

i believe you need to know how to program in 2D before you can achive 3D programming, seems to be the case. but 3D programming Is my long term goal.
I'm interested in a fun project to learn.
I'm 26, working as a computer repair tech in california and am a very elementary programmer hobbyist.
I'd be glad to work with basic 2d drawing (Could use d3d to do it), but I have enough experience to know that a 3d game (And all the math) is over my head right now.
