Help! I can't install DirectX 9.0c!!!

Even after installing 9.0c from different sources, my dxdiag still shows that I have 8.1!!!
I still can't run any program requiring 9.0c! When I checked the file versions of my .dll files, their file version #'s are definitely not for 9.0c! They should be 4.9.0.904 but what I have is 5.3.2600.2082! I can't overwrite it with the right one and I can't delete it. Everytime I try to install 9.0c, it always says that all components have been installed but it actually doesn't change a thing!

You should be using the Windows Update program located in your start menu under "all programs" group. Run it and if it says no updates for direct x then you probably have the latest installed.

What version of windows are you running? I don't think '98 supports DX9 at all, if that's what you're running.
Are you using MS Vista?
If so you already have the latest version of DX9, what you might be missing is one of the DLL's that is something like D3DX9_30.DLL
