Is tetris really helpful for a beginner?

You could do Snake as an even simpler alternative to Tetris. It's similarly grid-based and involves only the most rudimentary of game logic and input processing. Just putting something together that looks and plays like the old Nokia phone version is a good challenge for beginner-level coding. It also involves almost no graphical content so you can concentrate on the game itself without worrying about the art etc.
