Accelerated Hardware not working?

Hi I am using glut to do my windowing in a C++/OpenGL program in Ubuntu. When I try to run my program (runs fine in Windows), I get this error message: freeglut (./Snowboarding): Unable to create direct context rendering for window 'Snowboarding' This may hurt performance. I think possibly it is something to do with drivers? Some screensavers in Ubuntu seem to run awfully slow too. I have a 7800gtx so they should cope fine... Any help please?

Have you downloaded and install the NVIdia drivers?

No, I thought Ubuntu did it for me. It asked me something about using drivers and I said yes.

Well I am about to download them now. How do I find out what version of Ubuntu I am running? I.e 32 or 64 bit?

I don't want to be mean by using the Linux community mantra, but the above link does cover many issues.

I've had plenty of issues getting acceleration to work in Ubuntu. Most often, the problem comes having both, proprietary and open source drivers installed. In my case unfortunately it involved a missing module, which required kernel compilation.....

First step would be: 'dmesg | grep EE', to see if something went wrong during driver loading.
