Hardware compatibility testing & hardware requirements

Hello, I was wondering if anyone had any wisdom to share with regards to evaluating hardware compatibility and figuring out what reasonable "minimum system requirements" for a project are. We're super-low-budget, so we don't exactly have a lab full of hardware to play with. Right now, we're testing on both Intel and AMD machines and with both NVIDIA and AMD/ATI graphics cards. Picking a minimum system configuration to support has got to be a balancing act between (1) not wanting to write eighty-four billion renderpaths, (2) wanting your game to look good on recent hardware, and (3) not wanting too much of the potential customer-base to be unable to play the game. How far back have you chosen to extend hardware support in your project, and what hardware compatibility testing have you chosen to do? Cheers, & thanks for your thoughts!

The Valve hardware survey might be interesting to you.
Thanks, that was very enlightening.
