'Whiteboxing'

A few days ago I looked at a video Development Diary of Fable 2, and when I heard about whiteboxing I was interested so I took a map i had drawn of a city and started whiteboxing in Google Sketchup Pro, like Lionhead did. I found out that Sketchup is pretty laggy if you add some more detail, but then I looked at the video again and i saw that they added way more detail then me without getting lag. Does anyone know how to solve this? I already looked at the help center at Google Sketchup but I shouldn't have this problem. Or should i just use another program, if so, which one? Here is that video by the way:
Ps. Sorry if i posted this in the wrong forum/catagory. [Edited by - Daan013 on December 18, 2008 7:55:20 AM]

Perhaps they're simply running on more powerful systems than yours? Whatever it is, apparently Sketchup isn't good enough for your needs, so perhaps you should take a look at some other tools, like Blender, or perhaps a level-editor for an existing game (UnrealEd, Hammer, whatever you like).

In other words, find out what (tool) works best for you. :)

Yeah thanks, I already thought about the system but this is really ridiculous, I mean: In Sketchup PRO I make a very, very undetailed landscape without even texture, but I can play Crysis on Low-Medium lol.
Guess Sketchup Pro is pretty worthless.

Crysis uses DirectX9 (or 10), while Sketchup uses OpenGL. Try updating your video drivers first. If that doesn't work, try going back to a previous version. I have experienced poor OpenGL performance with some of nVidia's drivers before, especially in apps that don't use VBO's for rendering.

I have a Ati-Radeon X1250, so... could that nVidia problem happening to me too???

No. I don't have an ATI card (except at work, but I don't do any game development or 3D modeling there), so I don't know if ATI has any issues with their drivers for OpenGL.

I would still try updating your drivers to see if it makes any difference.
