Real-time bokeh (high quality DOF)

I remember seeing something on Kawase Masaki's page somewhere, where he was using a 3-pass blur to get hexagonal DOF.
Instead of the horizontal/vertical passes used normally, this was 3 angular passes, each rotated 120º... maybe collecting the maximum value along each sampling path.
Wish I could find the page I was reading before!
