Well, that would involve using fourier analysis. Basically, spectrum analyzers are broken up into sections, each with a certain frequency range, and illustrate the intensity of the noise at those particular frequencies. It's not extremely easy stuff, it requires a firm grasp of how sound works and such (harmonics and everything) and a bit of calc. I'm sure there's source code lurking around somewhere on the subject, though...
