No. It is not possible to be friends with anyone under any circumstance when you have less power than your so-called friend. IRC teaches many of this every day. IRC Ops needs to remember that some things can't be undone. Maybe IRC needs to ask itself why there are no John Carmacks online? Or maybe it doesnt. IRC is dominated by petty ops who will never know what self control means and who will never care to ask the question. And I should clarify, I've seen the dynamics of IRC for 15 years. You get banned over petty crap and 99% of users go back and accept the reality... you have no power. Been there done that. I don't do that anymore and efnet #gamedev can testify. I will never enter afternet #gamdev either. I view it as a good thing because when you obey the rules and you get banned because an op who you've been convering with simply gets too angry to maintain reason and just decides to ban you... hell with them. IRC Ops like to pretend that everyone EXCEPT them lack maturity but it's all just a facade. And users are easily fooled into believing that IRC users are smarter and wiser than average people, but I've come to learn that IRC Ops are unforunately typically arrested developed souls. This prevents them from achieving a more rational stance in their communications with other people. Hypnotron (i have logs)

Did i ask to be banned forever out of the blue? Or was an ultimatum given first? Let's be fair. And to be clear, I'm not complaining about being banned forever. In fact I suspect Washu would unban me in a week or a month or whatever. The point is I'm never going back. My eyes are open now. I don't want to have some pseduo friendship with people who turn on you in a moment's notice and say "you can't come back here."

That's why the topic of this post is "On Friendship In the Crowd" or how in IRC at least that is false.

I really don't see it in those logs, That ban was definitly uncalled for in my opinion(All hypno really did was call him out on his 1 in 50 "statistics"), i can understand if TheGuru got upset if he has had friends who comitted suicide but i'd still expect moderators to act reasonably professional. That kind of moderator behaviour is something you'd expect from a channel operated by 12 year old kids, not #gamedev, Moderators should be required to behave far better than the users, not allowed to behave worse.

You sir are full of it and you can hide behind this claim and have your plausible deniability all you want. You aren't fooling anyone. I've been on IRC for 15 years and this wasn't about some mistake over me being insensitive, this was about challenging an erroneous claim of an op who had no proof to back up his statement.

Everyone, read the relevant log snippet I posted and judge for yourself VERSUS the "abridged" version BitMaster posted that has me looking like a monster. You decide who is trying to fool you.

In this context within the short time sequence, I would say so. Obviously TheGuru had the same impression that you give a [defecation] each for his dead friends and would like him to follow suit with that. Again, if you are of the opinion that the abridged messages sufficiently changed the context to avoid that, you are free to explain it.

But even then we are down to a misunderstanding that could have been cleared up with a reasonable talk with that op or another.
