Fair point. I just always view them mentally as the same thing, which is incorrect despite me probably continuing to view them that way for the foreseeable future :-p

That still doesn't make any sense. Israel didn't exist yet. The failed-nation of Palestine fought a civil-war with itself, then one side declared independence from the other.

I just posted a modern history of the Israel Palestine conflicts 2 posts above yours. The civil war happened after the British(I guess technically this was the UN, but I believe it was brought up by the British and voted on by the UN) separated Palestine into a Jewish and Arab state; literally hours after the vote for the UN partition plan. The separation was in large part due to the multiple Arab uprisings after splitting palestine off of the former ottoman empire and the fact that the Jewish Palestinian population actively supported the allies while the Arab population supported the axis.
