Where do you get sounds from, anyway?

I'm looking for sounds for my game, and to blunt: everything I've found sucks.

I'd like to post an “I'm looking for this” sort of thread where I can list sounds that I want, but I think that is against the rules here since it touches on trying to hire someone. So let me just ask about finding good sources for sounds instead.

If I spend a couple hours sifting through the Unity Asset Store I can manage to find sounds that are passable at best, but still need editing anyway. I've searched for royalty-free sounds online but google directs me to sites with pitiful sounds that were basically never meant to be heard.

But I know that people are getting sounds from somewhere. Oh sure, plenty of people record new sounds, but that's not always an option and I'm not talking about that. Where do people get good quality sounds from? The stuff that's heard in quality games? What are these other sources that actually have good sounds?
I saw a video that sourced all the sounds from Doom, and it mentioned how most of them came from a collection that a lot of studios were using, and indeed I've seen many games and movies and shows from the 90's that have used the same sound samples from the same collection. And I imagine since then there have been more collections of good quality sounds. But where are these coming from?

I found sonniss.com to be a decent starting place.

epidemicsound.com, bensound.com, freesound.org are pretty cool but I think no sound will ever be perfect always have to tweak them

I would consider hiring someone, even with a small budget. You'll get more customized, better results for your game. Check out https://www.fiverr.com/ for example. Lots of really talented and very fairly priced freelancers on there. You could also look through here and see if someone fits the bill: https://gamedev.net/contractors/

Hope that helps!
