What are some tips for an AI Programmer?

I'm kind of new at this, but I have developed some simple characters with simple animations and behavior conditions. Can anyone give some advice on what you think all the mechanics a character should have (e.g., patrol mechanic, vision, action when condition met, etcetera)? Like, for an RPG/Strategy game.

Just wanted some advice from people who know how to create actual games. I haven't made my own yet.

They should have the mechanics needed to serve the characters' designed/intended purpose in the game.
