I''m planning on building an Isometric game (as stated in a previous post a few days ago) But i seem not to be able to find any books on SDL for windows, so am i better off buying a book on linux programming(which will obviously show a little of SDL) or : Isometric gaming using Dirext 7 making it DIRECTX and then porting it to SDL ?(don''t seem too good of an idead I''m a sorta begginner in programming. So question is: Any good books on SDL programming out there? (we plan on using the game mainly on windows platforms(98/NT)) Tnx

''Programming Linux Games'' is just about the best one I can think of. The problem here is that it is for linux programmers, but you could more than likely learn what you need from it. I also hear the book ''linux game programming'' is good. Unfortunately, most SDL books-which there are very few of- are for linux. SDL looks the same for Linux and Windows though, so you shouldn''t have any problems.

SDL comes with -ALL- the documentation you could ever possibly want. The only problem is the companion libs like SDL_image, SDL_mixer etc that don''t have -any- docs (although the headers are extremely well commented so it amounts to the same thing). Also the SDL site links to quite a few good tutorials for beginners. Programming with DirectDraw then porting to SDL is just going to create more work for yourself (like painting a house blue when you really want it green, you can add a second yellow coat while it''s still wet - or you can paint it green the first time).

3 things:

  1. We have an ongoing series by Ernest Pazera covering SDL on Windows. Given his affection for isometric games, he''ll probably cover things of interest to you.
  2. As the anonymous poster indicated, Isometric Game Program is largely about the algorithms. It''d be very easy to port to SDL.
  3. There''s a book for SDL and Win32 in the works, but it probably won''t be out soon enough for you.
