I am a complete beginner who wants to learn how to make low polygon game models. I cannot afford expensive software but have Caligari truespace 3 and also Blender. Can someone point me in the right direction.

googlesearch for

* box modelling
* low poly modelling

just an idea, you''d be able to pick up an old version of 3dsmax quite cheap. its much easier to use than truespace, and definitely easier to use than blender.

i could teach you truespace, but then, i have homework too....

I''ve looked for old versions of software like 3dsmax and others and couldn''t find them (google search, etc.). Do you know where I could find these programs (legally of course ...obviously warez sites have plenty of software for free, but that''s another matter...).
Legally you can''t buy old/used software. That''s just one of the quirks of the software industry. If you''re just getting started though don''t worry about what program you''re using. Here is a good tutorial that is written for 3ds max, but the techniques should apply to most programs.

I have only one address for you. www.milkshape3d.com.
this site is the home of the cheap modeler designed only to do low poly models. it works very much like 3ds and is really easy to learn. although, i dont think you want to buy another program, there are a lot of useful tutorial links on this site that will help you to develope your skills in this field. it would help if you had ms3d to understand some of the tutorials as most of them are for this software. THough, ms3d is only $20 us and is quite effective.
also, as most of the tutorials are written by swedish people, you might have to put up with some engrish. its ok though, they still get the point quite well. i highly recommend it.
also, you might try www.polygods.com and www.polycount.com.
these sites cater to the modeler who wants to make skins for existing games but the knowllege of how to do stuff is valuable. just omit the last sections on exporting to game formats.

WRONG. Although, it used to be right. One of the few ( only? ) good things about the DMCA. One of it''s sections specifies that the right to first sale *cannot* be taken, regardless of EULA. So, any software that says you can''t, is wrong. This I''m pretty sure on, heard it on a 2600 mailing list.

In the UK, you can get Cinema4d v5SE on a cover disk - It is quite nice
There is Gmax which is a max-light thing with format limitations but free or the shareware tool Milkshape.
