    C++ wish-list/rant

    Quote:Original post by ToohrVyk In the end, it takes as much typing as break for for; You forgot to count the colon. That makes 14 letters. Doctor Pedantic strikes again! EDIT: Oooh, oooh, and the extra newline, too! That's 15!
  2. An Easter Message From Rev. Brendon Higgins May I extend my warmest greetings to all those celebrating Easter this year. A year has passed and once again it is time to celebrate our lord and saviour. But in this era of wars, famines, epidemics, and reality TV shows, it is important that we not lose sight of the original message of the season: Chocolate. It is important for families all around the world during this time to come together to celebrate the Easter Bunny, and to thank Him for His sacrifice, giving His ass so that we may enjoy the eternal bliss that His egested Chocolate eggs brings us. Sadly, this critical part of the Easter tradition is, for many people, being forgotten. We the faithful must remain focused and dedicated. The temptation may be great, but during this time we must remember that the Chocolate of your brethren is not yours. You can't just take it out of the fridge and eat it yourself. What the hell made you think you could? I was going to eat that Cherry Ripe, what gave you the impression I wasn't? I was saving it! Anyway, as a society, we are running the very serious risk of bearing towards a malevolent evil. Carob has poisoned the minds of those who call themselves "health conscious", leading them to reject the word of Cadbury. We must remember that such people are not evil, they are simply misguided, and they need our help. We need to offer them our support, love, and Chocolate (not mine) so that we may one day all bask in the glory of Cadbury, Chocolate, and the Easter Bunny. But more importantly, we must not get between me and my Chocolate. I'm serious, now what the hell did you do with those Caramel Eggs? You didn't eat them, too, did you? Love, forgiveness, tolerance, understanding, and self-sacrifice. They all take a back seat if you get in the way of my chocolate. Don't fuck with my chocolate. I mean it, if you keep fucking with my chocolate I will hunt you down and I will cut you. I wish everyone a happy, safe, and above all, Chocolaty Easter, and may Cadbury bless you with many sweet things. And stay the hell out of my fridge. The Reverend Brendon "Seriously, don't fuck with my Chocolate" Higgins

    Do you pee in the shower?

    Aim it straight down the drain, no worries. It all connects to the same waste water system where I am, anyway. Quote:Original post by Conner McCloud Quote:Original post by dwarfsoft What is it about water that makes a fart smell all the worse? The fart molecules [methane?] cling to the steamy air, where it more readily accesses your nose. CM Methane is odourless. The smell is hydrogen sulfide (among other miscellaneous things). --- And while I think of it, how the hell do you come up with thread topics like this? Do you ask yourself "What's the grossest personal question I can ask the forums without getting banned?"

    Denmark cartoon controversy

    Quote:Original post by alnite I believe in freedom of speech, as long as its purpose is to critically points out certain things/errors in the other party. But to me, this specific cartoon only exists to mock and insult the Islam. The terrorists are Muslims, but not all Muslims are terrorists. If they want to say something about terrorism, they shouldn't use Muhammad as their point of reference. You do realise it's the same construct that allows this cartoon to be published, that also allows other people to express their outrage at it. The whole point of Freedom Of Speech is discourse, to throw ideas around and see which stick and make sense, and to criticise and ridicule the ideas that don't. Without any back and forth, stimulus/response, the concept breaks down. The cartoon pissed off some people, there's nothing surprising about that. But any suggestion that limiting free speech to certain kinds of publications is by definition no longer free speech. You can't have free speech as long as its purpose is critical examination without mockery or ridicule. Then libel and slander come into the equation, but the thing is this occurs after publication, not before. It may encourage self-censorship, but self-censorship is a different area entirely. I hope that made more sense than I think it did.
  7. What Objects don't have a velocity or mass? Seriously, I'm asking. If there are some, then you could try an extra level of class, like "Physical" or something that inherits Object, that actually has those properties, and pass pointers of that to CPhysicsHandler.

    Your Precious Pi

    So, uh, are we offending anyone when we say "pie"? If not, who cares? If we are... who cares? English is already screwed up plenty, this is just another case. And we all know what we mean. And, heck, most people are blissfully ignorant. So "pee" is the historical root, but "pie" is the modern English pronunciation of the Greek letter π. Things like that happen.

    Political influence on science

    I may need to qualify that this has no bearing on the validity of the study in question, but... Quote:Original post by Valderman Do you think it's OK for governments to act this way? Science simply looks for the truth, and truth does not respect legislation. It's stupid to think otherwise.

    tic-tac-toe code - critique

    Looks very good, pretty clean, well modularised. Nice job. I would've used chars instead of strings for board and playerChar, but you could argue that such optimisation is unnecessary, and your way actually allows greater flexibility. I don't know what you would use that flexibility for, though... Still, well done.

    Sneezing - Correct societal response?

    Quote:Original post by boolean Has anyone else found that if you put your finger under your nose horizontally, it usually makes the sneeze go away? And another thing, what are you supposed to say to people when they sneeze? I always feel like I'm supposed to say something, like 'bless you', but if I don't then I'm an uncaring bastard. The correct phrase in all situations is "Shit, what the hell was that!? Arrg germs! GERMS! Aaa, they're all around me! AAAAAAAHHHHH!" Don't forget to run away screaming and swinging at the air to knock away all the contagions.

    file copy

    Quote:Original post by Zahlman !! Don't abuse NULL like that. The return from fgets is an integer (the number of characters read), not a pointer. Check against 0 instead. Better yet, don't explicitly say what you're checking against; you just want it to be non-zero, and "if (fgets(...))" is idiomatic - "if possible to get a string from the file...". I call bullshit. But, yes, there are better ways to do this.

    Hydrino Power Controversy

    Quote:Original post by Stonicus Quantum mechanics is accurate... _____________(fill in the blank) We already know it probably isn't. It doesn't fit quite right with General Relativity, so one or the other, or both, are innaccurate.
