What's with CS majors?

Is it just me, or do most students intending to major in computer Science not actually know computer science entering college? I understand that a student with a major in law doesn''t have experience in that subject, or that someone majoring in physics would only have a fundimental knowladge of mechanical physics; but I figured that everyone going into CS would have a ton of experiance with computers. I was shocked when I went to my college and met with some of my fellow students. I was the only one with a strong programming background (I''m not trying to say that I''m an expert at programming) out of the 20-30 I asked. Most of them knew very little about computers in general. Can this be? Do most CS majors enter college with very little exposer to the various aspects of computers (networking, programming, computer repear, etc...)? I was worried that I would be behind my classmates so I taught myselft all that I could (as you can see I never got around to spelling and grammer). I programmed computer games, a scripting language, endless useless little programs, and I even build a simple robot so that I would have experience with putting together circutry. I also took a networking class so that I would not be behind as far as that goes. I''m I going to a college with idiots or did I just give myself a huge head start on the others? Once again, I''m not trying to say I know everything, it''s just that the other students knew nothing (ofcourse there are others like me, by random chance I just didn''t manage to find one. I know they are there).

myopic rhino, i''m thinkin'' the same way. i''m majoring in Cmptr Engineering (which i find out damn near close to graduation that it''s nothing more than half-ass CS and half-ass EE) and i too see lots of people just doing it cuz of the money. that''s pretty sad. how can you go through college learning something that you''re not thrilled about? never understood that. and everyone on this board i would imagine, has got the edge, cuz not only that, they have the drive to be creative as well as learn more than they''re required to.
