Hello!
Are there any (preferably free) (semi-) random 8/16-bit music generators out there?
If so, has anyone got any links?
Thanks!

Hello there!

I know some, they like to be called "musicians", though.

Just kidding, of course. ;)

This little site generates random MIDI tunes. Given the nature of randomness the results are mostly chaotic, but you can load them in a sequencing program, tweak them a bit and assign custom sounds.

If you're thinking about putting random stuff into your game though, please consider contacting one of the many talented guys on this board. I'm sure you'll find someone who will do a better job than any random-tune-producing software, even with a small budget.

Cheers,
Moritz

I posted an article under AI here a while ago about procedural music generation with a markov chain based generator. I also posted all the code required to compile it. It will work on just about any symbolic input including plain text. It still has a few bugs, but you're more than welcome to use it as you want. I tested it using .ABC music notation.

[NOTE: the original account I had posted the youtube vids was taken down by google in error, so the links no longer work, i'll post new ones here when i get them re-uploaded]

Both videos were created via feeding the program samples from Chrono Cross and are played via the in-game Lord of the Rings Online ABC player.
