I recently upgrade windows 7 to try out windows 8. I remember reading speculations about how some companies were afraid of the windows store being built into it and so I wanted to see what the modern ui/metro and the store was all about. For me metro looked cool but most of the time I was in desktop mode. I didn't use the store that often and when I did it was to purchase a game like ilomilo plus.

Do you use the windows 8 store on your desktop? Or are most of the users of it on the tablets? I ask because a lot of reviews for games and applications I see mention how great it is on their tablet. And I was some what confused by this.

I think talking about the store is talking about apps from the store, so ...

I actually started using MS One Note after installing Windows 8 on my laptop (which I got off the store), because it's actually not a bad little note-taking app. But the funny thing is, when I'm programming, I still just open up notepad on the desktop out of habit. Even though using the start-screen is faster.

I think in time, there will be ports to RT which I'll come to use, as there are many apps that are suitable to the RT system. I still don't fully understand the limitations on networking and storage, so even though I think an app like iTunes should be an RT app, I don't know if it can be. That's just probably due to my ignorance of the RT system and it's contracts and facilities.

There are a heap of apps though that could be RT. Nearly anything I put on my 2nd monitor could be RT ... pdf viewers, notepads, browsers, music players, because my first screen is my main workspace where I'll have Visual Studio or Photoshop open and my second screen is for anything I'm referring to, playing in the background or just want in standby mode.

But there is still a lot of kinks to workout, like which window an RT app will open up on. Those settings just aren't in the system yet (as far as I know) and that means more window shuffling and lower quality user experience. Another gripe of mine is that I get thrown back to the start-screen after closing an app instead of being thrown back to the desktop. That places an unnecessary step in my way (minimizing the start-screen). Those are fundamental navigation flaws in the RT-Desktop scenario. And those flaws will slow the uptake of Windows Store apps. I don't know by how much, but people are really fussy, look at the whole start-menu/start-screen debate.

Yes, I will use the store and I will keep an eye on it for sure. If I have the option of buying a casual game for desktop or RT, I would say I'll choose RT for sure.

I hadn't previously used the windows store in windows 8. I expected it to be much sparser. I'm actually pretty impressed at some of the apps just browsing through. In my 15 minutes since actually starting to look around, I already really like the nook app and the khan academy app. So far it seems better than the wp8 store. I will probably not continue using it with significance, but it isn't as bad as I expected.
