Parallax Occlusion Again

After finding several bugs in my Parallax Occlusion Mapping effect file, I think I finally have it working properly now. It actually took much longer than I thought it would to get all of the theory figured out for exactly how it works and all, but I have a good handle on it now.

It doesn't look very realistic, but I made another demo video with the height scale cranked up for viewing the parallax effect.

Video: POM_Divx60.avi

Check out the video and let me know what you think. I would be interested in hearing your comments.

Looks great! Get that up on a wall and see how it looks.

Wow, it's an amazing thing parallax. Your video shows it nicely. How does it look as the plane becomes more 'flat to the camera'?

Thanks for the replies. The parallax effect actually still looks half way decent as it become more edge on. There is definite aliasing due to the texel to pixel ratio, but it doesn't look too bad (at least at not interactive sampling rates!).

I sent in an article on parallax occlusion mapping a few days ago. It has several images and comparisons of image quality vs. speed, and specifically discusses what effects to expect when looking edge on. Hopefully it will be posted soon!
