The story of the search for style

More recently started making games. All graphics drawing itself. In the current game, it takes much more than in my first game. Who cares (Grater Google play link).
Starting to draw graphics month ago. It turned out this:

I tried and tried, watching other games. Google pictures on request "Tower Defense", "Building game" etc. Tops games in the same genre in Play market. Really love the game Kingdom Rush (played in the first version of the browser) and the style of this game was largely the inspiration.
The style began to change, now it suits me perfectly. And besides, he was quickly drawn and changing. Since everything in the vector.

There are many example of art styles (I think of manga/anime), where the backgrounds are quite detailed and the characters are cell/flat shaded. If you keep it consistent (object vs environment), then the art style could work.

Have you done any mock-ups ?

Asham, that works only if the toons are smaller than the backgrounds thus creating a detailed look anyway. I think you are correct that a "mockup" is needed to determine if it will work or not.

So it seems possible because of the black contour units. Since the buildings he picked up a base color. If the units to make it less bright get:

I'll try to see this style in the first level. There is only one kind of towers and a couple of units.

The game is on Unity, so if you're interested, the first level you can try through the Unity web player. And it soon :)

It would be great. And do not know much this genre, and probably was hastily taken for it :) But it is interesting
