I've always been a casual fan of Star Wars. By casual, I mean that I don't dress like a wookie and wait outside the movie theatre a week before the movie starts showing. I enjoyed the dark nature of this movie which has been absent from other versions.
The main plot of Star Wars has always revolved around Anakin/Vader, whos actions effect the fate of the universe. The prequal movies are supposed to show how this one nobody becomes the most significant person in the universe. This rise to significance, however, is down the path of evil, and needs to be told in a dark and depressing way. The fundemental problem with Episodes 1 and 2 is that there was such a light-hearted mood in the movies that they did little to advance this main plot. Episode 3 was the first time that a Star Wars movie has showcased powerful emotions, in my opinion. Although the movie was sometimes corny, it truly was powerful in scope. Then again, Titanic was corny and it was the highest selling movie of all time.
So basically, I really enjoyed the movie. I urge even moderate Star Wars fans to go out and see it.
Some darkness, yes , but ridiculous. Did you ever see the movie Team America? Well after Anakins encounter with Mace Windu, Anakin's kneeling on the floor in front of the Empeeror. All I could think of was "Are you willing to do anything for your country Gary?" and then the Sidius starts growning. I couldn't help but laugh very hard, and I was seeing the movie by myself, everyone was looking at me funny but anyway this is also not really a huge problem.
My biggest problem was that there was no real catalyst for the character to change. Yes Anakins past experience with his mother and his visions of Padme must have been powerful, but it doesn't make sense to me that he would simply throw away over a decades worth of comrodery and training at some off chance wim, that some evil bastard was telling him he could change his future. I mean surely if Anakin was really this all powerful Jedi, he would have said, "Ok, this guy is obviously evil, he's been lying to me and everyone to advance his own motives a lone. Why would he care to help me?" I guess logically for me, the whole premis of how and why he turns to the darkside is just flawed like a piece of stinky cheese that has just been put through a pressure washer. Sure love and fear can make people do stupid things, but it usually doesn't cause their entire character to change, especially within a days time, which is essentially how long it takes for Anakin to turn to the darkside.
Also the way the story resolution was done, it was just too casual, they only cattered to story elements to make them connect. It seemed like they had to try too hard, where as if it was done correctly, or better, the pieces would have overlapped seemlessly, which wasn't the case. The whole ending seemed forced.
My biggest beef of all the new movies, WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO YODA'S SPEACH? What, yoda learns to talk better after much meditation of Dagobah? What ever, that was one of the worst moves ever, and they stuck with it. Oh well though. More force power too em. Sorry for rambling so much in your journal.
