Parking Tickets, and Physics.

So last month I got pulled over for the very first time in my life. 9 years of perfect driving, all down the drain, sigh.

I was going through the Village of Corfu, which is a tiny little town near an amusement park; and they whip out the speed traps in summertime in order to catch all the careless kids that go flying through the town. I was actually going with the flow of traffic, at what I thought was a reasonable speed; 48mph. The cop got me in a 35mph zone and told me it was tough luck; he tagged me because I was on a cell phone, whereas no one else was.

Anyway, he said that since I was very nice and polite and hitherto had an exemplary record, he'd drop the cell phone ticket, but he still had to do the speeding ticket.

Last night I went to court for it, and I was very tempted to use the Heisenberg uncertainty principle to get out of it. You know, how both the speed and the position of an object can be measured, but only independently; observing one changes the other! So if the cop measured both my speed and location, one of them must have been wrong!

Yeah, I didn't want to push my luck, so I just pled guilty, got it reduced to a parking ticket, and paid the fine.

On a positive note; I had the lowest speed out of everyone there; everyone else was 50mph or more.

That's nothing to be proud of. I knew a guy who hit 250 km/h on the Trans-Canada in a modified RX-7. Cops couldn't keep up with him.

The UK is terrible for speeding now. We have 24hr side-of-road cameras, camera vans, motorbike camera police and these new tracking camera systems (they take a picture of your number plate, take another a few miles down the road and if you get there too fast you instantly get a ticket for speeding).

On top of that all speeding tickets now come with points on your license. 3 points to be exact and if you get 12 points you get your license revoked. Sigh.

I currently sport 3 points on my license for going too fast down a steep hill at 2am one night :-/

Wow, that's fucked up.

We got an EZ-Pass system installed on our I-90 interstate a few years ago; it's an automated toll road. They also said that they were planning on implementing a system where it would automatically issue you a speeding ticket if you got from one end to another too fast.

Luckily for Democracy, everyone flipped out and said we wouldn't vote for anyone who supported it, and the idea died a quick death.

Speed limits exist for one reason: increasing government revenue. That's pretty much the only way small towns get any money in the first place.
