Technically I guess, its some way of shouldering off the guilt of hurting someone who is/was close to you.

Certainly my most recent ex actually complained to me about how she felt after splitting up with me. Still refers to it as 'when we split up' rather than 'when I chucked you like a used hanky'.

Maybe thats my own bitterness?

We were supposed to be moving 300 miles away to start a family when she suddenly went batshit insane a week before we moved. So I broke it off, she's still moving in a few days, and I'm staying here.
