Can I assume that your goal is to make games? I started with QBasic, but that doesn't even count. I really started doing good things when I found the NEHE web site. I use OpenGL in combination with Win32. I never did learn much about real window creation etc.. because games make their own windows no borders usually full screen. I can make a 3d version of asteroids but I can't even set up a menu in MFC. I think you are doing quite well seeing as I can't do much. I have heard that SDL is good, but I got into straight up OpenGL instead. I'd say look and compare the options. Try them out, you can always change later or use various things at once depending on the needs.
