In short: I'm on a business degree and am looking for a position for a placement year (Beginning this year). Advice wanted. Background: I originally wanted to get into the games industry with an enormous passion. I wanted to be an artist or programmer for a developer, but, to cut it sweetly short, at uni that didn't pan out and I ended up on a computing degree. I am seeking a work placement year as part of a degree in Business Computing at a university in the UK. The minimum time I may begin is July 4th, 2005. I gathered some links from http://www.gamedev.net and am now applying for some now. http://www.datascope.co.uk/ http://www.aswift.com (Yeah, that mascot is completely professional) http://www.opmjobs.com/ Does anyone have any advice or even know UK publishers that may interest me? Does my degree seem relevant or not at all? It is slightly more business-related if anything but I'd like to find out for certain if I could go on the publishing track.

These companies are of no use to you, they are recruitment agencies and they charge a fee for putting an employee into a job. Publishers aren't going to pay an agency a fee for a student placement. You need get on the phone to the publishers directly, talk to their human resources department and ask if they do placements and have any vacancies. Chances are, given the large number of students and small number of placement positions, that most if not all positions will already be filled.

I wouldn't have any idea which publishers would interest you. All the big players (and many small ones) have a UK presence so you should be able to find one that interests you.

It's a mix of networking, organisation behaviour and busines 'stuff'.

The best option (fastest) is to go to the web sites of all the publishers you know, check the "Corporate" page for contact details and phone them (not email).
