Maybe not most fun, but I still play some roguelike games (Angband and Nethack), and love them.
Years ago I played MUDs all the time (had to give up, they were too addictive).
And don't forget Interactive Fiction - Adventure, Zork are classics - even some of the newer ones are great. I'm still working my way through Curses.

The best piece of advice I have is to start small. I have too many projects that never got finished because they were too ambitious. Realise that it's going to take time before you are going to get something super impressive done. Focus on the little things that you need to learn, and as time goes by start putting those pieces together.
