Hi I know about md2 format - keyframes for movement. Can anyone give a high level flavour of the others, md3 etc and I even heard of md5 ? cheers

google is your best friend. googleing for "MD5 model file format specs" returns, as its first result:

you should look into the .mdl format

see collada more powerful than md5 + has exporters for all modelling apps
If I am not mistaken MD3 is similar to MD2, but the model is broken in 3 chunks (or was it just 2?), head, torso and legs, this allows you to run different animations on each, such as "run" on the legs while "firing" on the torso, it is the file format used in Quake 3, I never really used it.

I really have no idea if there is a MD4 file format (there probably is one, just maybe never used on a published game?).
