Link to site The contest we had awhile ago proved to be very successful, producing some excellent games. In an attempt to produce even more excellent games, I am starting up another contest. It starts Nov. 13 (this Sunday) at 0:01 GMT, and goes until Nov. 20 (the following Sunday) Nov. 21 at 0:01 GMT. It's a week. See below for more. The Rules You can only use one keyboard button to control the game. This means: no mice, no joysticks, no squeaking into the microphone, no shaking your PC. You may use one button to quit the game, but only one may be used to control. Consider input schemes like: Morse code, holding and charging, or tapping quickly. Take a look at previous entries for ideas. Entries must run on a Windows XP SP2 computer, which has Java 1.5, .NET Framework 1.1, OpenGL 1.2, and DirectX 9.0C installed. Minimum spec is P3/1GHz with a GeForce 5-series GPU. All other game makers, engines, etc. are OK if you have the rights to legally re-distribute executables made with them and provide the DLLs and other files required to run the entry. Send your entries (or a link to your entries) to me via email. Entries will be scored by a panel of judges (TBA) from 1-10 and the entry with the highest total score will win a Radeon 9600 courtesy of Schmedly. The second highest will win a downloadable copy of Morning's Wrath from EDI. There may also be special categories that your entry can win in. A one word theme will be announced Nov 13 23:01 GMT. Your game must somehow incorporate this theme (think "Adventure", "Collecting", "Fire", etc). This is to prevent people from starting their entries early. Teams of arbitrary size are allowed, but you must decide how to split the prizes, if any Entries contibuted (including source if provided) will be reposted on the contest webpage. Entrants maintain their own IP and code ownership -- please provide a license if you contribute source. Due to some mishaps with the time zone, there will be a one day grace period for submitting your entries. Consider this a one day extension -- you can spend it polishing off your game or just packaging it to submit to me. The new absolute cut-off time is now UTC Nov 21 00:01, or EST Nov 20 19:01 So, any questions should go here, or let me know if you are going to endeavour to produce something. I will probably produce a little demo game this time around but I won't enter it into the contest. [grin] The Theme: COLLECTING The contest is ON! Why One Button? Well, it's fun to make games with minimalist control schemes. It's also useful -- many people want to play games but have accessibility issues (poor muscle, etc) -- look at OneSwitch for some of the people these games might help. The contest is over! So you have a 7-day game, then I lose a whole day because you can't be bothered to check you got the date right? You release the theme a whole day early so all the people who were organised are probably penalised as they wouldn't check early.

Sorry for seeming rude but it's bad enough 4E4 changing the rules secretly without finding I've missed 1/7 of my development time - well more like 1/2 since a weekend day is REALLY valuable to us with jobs and now I lost one.

Rrr. I'm sorry. I'll allow one day of late extension if necessary. You send it to me via email: ravuya (at) gmail.com -- make sure to rename .zip, etc entries to .zip.xyz because GMail seems to think that it should protect me from viruses.

- What is important? Art, graphics, speed, and/or creativity?
- Will submitting the source give a better chance of winning, if it does will "good" source get an even higher chance?
- Will making the game cross-platform improve your score?

Also will the winner (not because I expect to even have a chance) be able to choose between the two prizes or will (s)he just get the graphics card?

1. If it's fun to play, I score it highly. Making me laugh or chuckle with glee (for example, being able to chainsaw lots of things) makes it more fun.
2. I don't care about source.
3. It would be nice but I won't bump up the score any, some other judges may.

As for the two prizes, I have to ask EDI if he will donate another copy of MW, if so the first prize will be a copy of MW and a Rad9600. If you don't want the 9600, you can of course opt to have it given to another entry. More on this later.
