For the rendering on Linux i know you have to use ICU or Pango together with freetype. Freetype just does the glyph rendering - nothing else.
All the painfull features in the TrueType Tables most be done seperatly.

Sorry Fionn, my expertise in in text handling and to a lesser extent the rest of plain-jane GDI. I like to play with 3D once in a while but that's pretty much it. For nitty gritty about perf and resource aspects of one method or another I'm sure other people on this forum are way more qualified.
