I am looking for some information on experience scaling for an RPG. For instance, at level 1 you kill a rat and you receive 100 xp, at level 2 you receive 85, at level 3 you receive 50, etc.

Historically, some games give the same amount of experience for a monster at every level (Ragnarok Online, AD&D 2 derivatives such as Baldur's Gate, most FF games), while others decrease that amount with your level (Diablo, D&D 3 derivatives).

The general idea behind this is that you want to set the time required to gain a level. So, once you know how much time should be spent leveling up, you can compute experience levels accordingly.
The amount of experience required to level up at each level usually increases exponentially. As for the amount gained per monster (for instance) can be based on a percentage determined by level difference between the player and the monster. The monster has a fixed amount of experience and depending on the number of levels between the monster and the player, a percentage of that fixed amount is gained.

Example: Monster level / Player level = Percentage
