I've dl'ed the driver to use the 360 controller with my computer but it is not being recognized. Could it be because its a wireless controller and I'm connecting it with my charge and play cord?

Yes. The Play and Charge cord doesn't carry the input signal to the PC, only power to recharge the controller. You need to get the wireless reciever if you intend to use your wireless controller on your PC. The corded controllers work fine without the need for a wireless reciever.
