PlayStation 3: Untapped Potential?

I don't think consoles will ever fade away. They might become closer to PCs, even running Windows or similar someday, but they will always exist. There is a wider appeal to consumers to get a $200-$300 (cheaper after the system has been out a while) box to hook up to their existing TV to play games when they want. There is no way you'll convince them to buy a dedicated gaming PC which will easily double or triple their investment. For many people, gaming only takes up 5-10 hours a week and to these people, one of the major demographics of console consumers in my opinion, consoles will always exist. Of course hard core gamers will probably eventually stop touching consoles as PC technology is rapidly leaving consoles behind, but the consoles will probably remain for casual gaming, media, and maybe a few bigger games.

Why do people think that pretty graphics makes good games? They spend so much making things look good that they loose out on game play.

I would rather place Knights of the Old Republic then Ice Planet because it is just a better game.

Actually the PC market is dying out. Its now the smallest part of the games industry, it was overtaken this year by the hand held market, which previously was the smallest market. PC games will never die out by console will continue to dominate the market simply because they are more convient. You have a dedicated machine that you can get 5 years of games out of. No need to spend an hour installing a new game, no worry about compatiblity problem. Just pop in the disk and play. Also you don't need multiple machines and copies of a game to play against your mates.

The PS3 is no where near its potential, it will take several years before game developers have the libaries, and experince working with the hardware to make the most of it. These things take time.

Have you noted consoles aquired HD?

BTW not everyone have a TV.

In 10 years their won't be gaming consoles as everyone will have transfered to gaming PC's.

People have been saying this since at least the tail end of the NES days. They have yet to be proven right. Just like people haven't given up their DVD players for media PCs or game consoles.

And we're further from it now than ever before, as evidenced by many of minyman22's points. The game console is coming into its own as a living-room multimedia entertainment device. It's doing things that we previously needed PCs for, and it's doing them better than PCs could. To say that consoles become less competitive against desktops as they begin to look like desktops on the inside is backwards reasoning.
