Swarm/Swarming programming within AI programming?

Hi there,

I'm new to the community and I'm doing a school project on video game programmers for a class on programming and the world/culture of it. I am wondering, who on a staff of programmers would be in charge of any swarm or swarming elements (i.e. herds: things like bees, schools of fish, zombie herds, etc.) Would an AI programmer be in charge of that? If not, what type of programmer would be?

Thanks!

I would generally say an AI programmer, e.g. flocking logic. There may be some exceptions, for example swarming insects may be used more as a graphical effect rather than controlling individual insects, so it may be an animation or particle system.

Thank you, this is very helpful! Additionally, are there any games (or resources of list of games) that have been notedly successful for implementing flocking/swarming?

I've had a look but I can't seem to find it any more but there used be an excellent tech demo video showcasing the flocking behaviour in starcraft 2.
