High Concepts

My goal was to make an original game centered around a "high concept" that my
brother keeps talking about. E.g Portal & Narbacular Drop was built around the
portal concept. An original idea at least seemed like a good idea having done 5 arcade clones already. I gave it a few weeks, brainstorming on paper and didn't like any of my ideas:

- Flower creation game, based on genetic programming. Not my style.

- Backwards shoot-em up where you place a limited stock of enemies on the
level map to stop the cpu-controlled player. How would it end?

- Physics based tetris game. Bouncy tetriminos? Already did a tetris game.

I sometimes forget that I'm just a beginner, and I should really just keep my
goals small in scale. So my direction is still to pick and old classic I like and
re-make it in some form. Maybe then something original will come out of it.

I tried that, it didn't end well..... (mind you, I was using XNA which I don't think is up to much despite the hype tbh, it doesn't make anything any easier)

I thought Portal was original until I picked up Prey pre-owned... Prey did it all first and did it all better.

Anyways, forget the old noob classics, there's too many Pong clones out there. You tried Pacman? That's something I'm tempted to try out.

Absolutely. I want my next game to use 2D sprites and with one or more scrolling background layers. In fact I've already picked a project to do, I'm just in the process of catching up with the log entries.
