Part 1. A game where you control a swarm

Here's the first entry in what I'm hoping will be a long series.

I recently watched an interview with John Carmack where he talks about his early days meeting John Romero and tells a story about Romero creating one game for every letter in the alphabet as a way to improve his skills as a game developer. Link to YT

I thought that would be a great challenge but instead of using the alphabet I would just finally realize all the game ideas I've been coming up with by simply making them as small I can while still being interesting to play. I'm using the word interesting and not fun since I cannot guarantee anything I create to actually be fun or be valuable to anyone other than myself.

So here goes:

The first part of this series will be me trying to make something of an idea I've had where I thought “Wouldn't it be interesting to control a swarm of bees?”.
Here is the actual game idea then:

What is the purpose of the game?
To make the player feel like they're controlling a swarm of brain-eating zombies.

How is it played?
Players have one way to interact with the game world which is by directing the head-zombie which the other zombies follow.
Zombies can eat brains to regain health.
Humans that have had their brains eaten turn into zombies.
The mission is to eat all humans without letting the head-zombie die.

I'll be using Unreal Engine.

Wish me luck!

Perhaps if the head zombie dies, the zombies revert to "just" being hungry for brains, but every time there's a squabble between zombies there's a chance a mob will form, and if any two mobs collide there's a chance a leader emerges and then led mobs become tribes - that's when you lose the game. ?

Get back to work on your game! ?

@blackbird4 Thanks for chiming in! I have definitely thought about having some swarms clashing but not sure how to simplify that mechanic enough to still keep the project small enough. Great idea with the “merging” swarms though!

Thanks for the encouragement!!

In games featuring zombies, it is usually the protagonist(s) to shoot them. In that case, shouldn’t it work in reverse? What if instead of aiming the gun, what if you could upgrade your zombies to have different abilities or control them as if they were an army

@M_Mart Thanks for reading and coming with feedback! Definitely in line of where I'm going here. I wonder if its possible to do that without it becoming an RTS though
