characters to fall in love with

instead of asking people "what kind or personality that makes a fictional character lovable," why not ask "who is your favorite (female, if you are male) fictional character?" and take her/his personality as data?

My compiler generates one error message: "does not compile."

Innmate 2993 and alnite - okay sure, let''s ask those questions as well.

Who do I identify with? I can identify with either a male or a female character, it doesn''t matter as long as the personality is right. Were I to insert myself into a work of fiction, my character would be as follows:

- placid-tempered, patient, amused by life, protective, lazy except when motivated by scholastic fervor or maternal instinct
- calm in emergencies, highly adaptable and enjoys the challenge of adapting, practical with moments of whimsy
- always has lots of inscrutable projects in various stages of completion
- psychoanalyzing all the other characters and manipulating them for their own good as well as mine

All in all, much like Dumbledore from Harry Potter.

I sympathize with anyone who is very intelligent and driven to sarcasm and irony by the fact that they are surrounded with idiots. (This doesn''t apply to here on gamedev of course )

Hmm, I think I already answered who are my favorite fictional characters, but I''ll sum up: Saionji from Utena, Tomo and Nuriko from Fushigi Yuugi, Snape from Harry Potter. I''m trying to think of games that have characters I like, but I''m not really coming up with any... Kuja from FF9 and Sydney from Vagrant story I suppose, but they''re rather stock egotistic bishounen villains.

And while I would like my works to be commercially successful, it''s not at the top of my prioriy list.

OK, here''s my favorite character:
Nakoruru from Samurai Shodown.

Reasons:
She is not a sexy girl with big breast and long legs. She is a regular girl, wearing regular outfit (some japanese tribe outfit). for some reasons, artists never expose any part of her body (in the game), making her innocent. you rarely see her porn on the web. if you do, it''s just inappropriate. i mean, she''s not designed to be a porn-looking girl.

another plus point for her. according to the story, her father died killed by the bad guy. she was left alone with her sister, but she was strong. anyway, for me, she is a different girl compared to other girls from other stories. and she has cute a voice.

About the love-hate kiss thing. At some point I thought about this and came to the conclusion that it has to do with passion. That when you hate someone with a passion it''s easy enough slip into the mushy stuff because you''re used to loving people with a passion. I don''t read a lot of books, but when I see this sort of situation on TV there''s the occassional scene where two characters are doing this sort of thing, but it doesn''t quite seem right because the passion isn''t there.

As for favorite characters, well I don''t read enough books to have one from a book. But from a game I''d have to say Celes of FF6. I might say that Usagi/Serena from Sailor Moon has won my heart, but I don''t find her particularly attractive.
I''d like to make the point again that ''identifying with'' is a matter of understanding their problem and wanting their success. It isn''t so much "what do you have in common" as if the audience will extend their feelings as though it could help. If you haven''t yet, watch Mobile Suit Gundam, its on Cartoon Network''s adult swim block currently. The character Amuro takes on a certain personality that you end up not liking him and associating more with the ''badguys.''

Anyways, data. I''ll stick to well developed characters

Male characters I''ve come to identify with:
Ashley Winchester (Wild Arms 2)
Brad Evans (Wild Arms 2)
Jet (Wild Arms 3)
Cloud (FF7)
Barret (FF7)
Fei (Xenogears)
Leonard Schelby (Memento)
''Jack'' (Fight Club)
Ko (MSG0083)
Gato (MSG0083)
Spike (Cowboy Bebop)
Gene Starwind (Outlaw Star)

As for the list of females, its a rougher list, I can at least list the ones who had a real problem that I wanted to see them solve.

Melfina (Outlaw Star)
Faye Valentine (Cowboy Bebop)
Lola (Lola Rennt / "Run Lola Run")
Elhaym (Xenogears)

As for lovable characters, thats a harder subject for me to deal with. Once the story is over, I don''t go and write a dozen fanfics, I say how great that was and move on.

...actually falling in love with a computer character is socially tragic compared even to getting aroused by one...

Hehe couldn''t agree more.
Falling in love with a virtual character is pathetic.
If you can''t sleep at night thinking of Lara, feeling warm, butterflies in your belly, if only we could..., well then you should seriously see a therapist.

Well, see, I''m not sure I agree. My theory is that we don''t fall in love with a person, we fall in love with our _idea_ of a person. You have your personal mythology, which is your concept of the role you play in scociety and specifically in a relationship, and then you kind of ''audition'' other people to see how they play opposite you. Love is when you notice that your personality and someone else’s can take complementary roles that will produce a satisfyingly dramatic relationship. You create your identity by how you picture yourself in relation to other people; you love someone because you like who you are in relation to them. For example: if you loved someone for their purity it could be because you picture yourself as a defender of that purity, or as a despoiler of it. Which theory fits nicely with Inmate2993''s asking what characters people identify with.

She spoke softly, I could hardly hear a word... but to miss a word she spoke would be ashame. This womans voice was so conforting, I could feel what she felt simply from the very way words simply rolled off her tongue to my ear. Innocence, love; she was a very caring woman, maybe... she didn''t seem the most secure, but she seemed to have confidence in who she was, and she seemed like she was true to the heart.

Her eyes were a journal. For a few seconds, I had to disregard her beautiful voice and her Brittish accent which was beginning to make me blush, just to stare into the beautiful depths of this woman''s eyes. She blinked, luckily, or else I probably never would have come out of my trance.

Her clothing was very exotic, not sexy, but out of the ordinary and expressive of her personality. Her first layer was a black tank top, the second a light grey or silver long sleeve, wide-sleeved shirt with fringes around the sleeve. From her waist down she had on a long skirt with gold, silver, and red designs etched upon it - maybe they were flowers.

Her hair... she didn''t seem like she cared much for her appearance. She put her hair up in a little ball-like thingamagig and put a black stick through it. I wonder what that was? I don''t know. I like people who don''t try hard to impress others.

Her skin was beautiful. I couldn''t see any scars or dark patches of skin, yet, she was obviosly not wearing any makeup. Natural beauty. So rare...

Thought it would be fun to turn it into more of a excerpt of a book as this is the writing forum.

To make things clearer, I would fall in love with someone who didn''t try to impress me, and was naturally beautiful. Anytime a woman with a Brittish accents speak I instantly blush. I don''t know why, but Brittish accents are very attractive. Soft voices are cool this way I have an excuse not to talk on the phone.. I don''t like phones. Skin is important, I like smooth skin. And the exotic clothing is a must... it shows the person is unique and has a personality that isn''t common among the rest of the people out there.

There''s another good idea. If anyone wants to post a piece of writing in which one character is thinking in a loving way about another character, go ahead! We could even do an experiment - do these passages work equally well if you switch the genders of the pronouns?

I totally second you on that I think you explain nicely the point I was desperately trying to make earlier on.

Which brings me back to what I said, you cant really make the perfect character that''s gonna please everyone, rather you can try to provide a lot of archetypes that are gonna please different people, and let the player choose which one they prefer (like in True Love), or let the player experience all of them (like in Three Sisters) and choose one at the end.
Or you can just target one particular type of pervert and make them very very happy by making the perfect fantasy for them (as in Immoral Study 1 and 2 ... brilliant stuff :-> )

Anyway...
